Please vote November 4th
Voters will decide on proposed increases to Texas homestead exemptions in the November 4th, 2025, election. If approved, the changes would apply retroactively to the 2025 tax year, offering significant relief to both general homeowners and those over 65.
Proposed exemptions for all homeowners
For all Texas homeowners, the 2025 ballot includes a proposition to increase the standard homestead exemption for school district property taxes from $100,000 to $140,000.
Proposed exemptions for homeowners over 65
For homeowners aged 65 and older, or those with disabilities, the ballot includes a constitutional amendment to increase the additional homestead exemption from $10,000 to $60,000.
If both of the November 2025 propositions are approved by voters:
The total exemption for qualifying seniors would increase from $110,000 (the current $100,000 general exemption plus the $10,000 senior add-on) to $200,000.
The tax ceiling (or tax freeze) for school district taxes would be recalculated to reflect the new, lower taxable value, and that new, lower amount would become the permanent tax ceiling.
How to apply for the exemptions in Bexar County
To receive the increased exemptions, homeowners must have an approved homestead exemption on file with their county appraisal district.
Check your status: You can check your exemption status in Bexar County by calling the Bexar Appraisal District customer service number (210) 224-8511
File an application: If you do not have an exemption on file, you can submit an Application for Residence Homestead Exemption (Form 50-114) online @ https://bcad.org/forms/
No need to reapply (if approved): For those already receiving the over-65 exemption, the new amount will be applied automatically if the propositions pass. Once approved, most exemptions automatically renew each year.
